Mitsubishi Motors Australia and Australia’s largest media organisation, News Corp Australia, have teamed up to get more Australian drivers behind the wheel of electric vehicles.
At a recent employee event at News Corp’s Sydney office, Mitsubishi showcased its world-first plug-in hybrid SUV, the Outlander PHEV, to help promote the smooth acceleration and near-silent driving characteristics of electric vehicles.
At the event, News Corp employees were invited to test drive the Outlander PHEV and experience first-hand the seamless performance of its highly efficient electric vehicle system.
News Corp head of environment Dr Tony Wilkins said the test drives were an opportunity for employees to experience EV technology for themselves.
“News Corp’s 1 degree environmental sustainability program encourages everyone to do things differently and shows that even small steps can make a big change to the environment,” he said.
“Through cars like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, people will realise the hybrid experience is superior to a standard vehicle; you don’t have noise, you don’t have the vibrations and the smoothness is amazing.”
With a spacious five seat interior, SUV practicality, 1,500kg braked towing capacity and four-wheel drive capability, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a functional and accessible electric car.
The Outlander PHEV – which stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle – boasts combined fuel efficiency of just 1.9-litres per 100 kilometres* – the lowest official ADR fuel consumption figure of any SUV sold in Australia. PHEV’s CO2 emissions are also super low at 44 gm/km.
Outlander PHEV achieves this high level of efficiency through a sophisticated plug-in hybrid system that combines a 2.0-litre internal combustion petrol engine, generator, power and motor control units, high capacity lithium-ion drive battery and front and rear electric motors.
The petrol engine, which is tuned to run at optimum efficiency, supports the electric drivetrain system by charging the drive battery and supplementing battery power in particular driving conditions.
It’s a clever system that operates seamlessly without any intervention from the driver.
