MMAI3DE Wrap Up with Hazel Shannon

December 27, 2017

MMAI3DE 2017 is done and dusted, how did you and Clifford go?
Adelaide was a disappointing result for us. Clifford as always put 110% in all three phases but we ended up picking up a 50 penalties on the cross country. 50 penalties are given when the jump judge doesn’t believe your horse went between the flags on a jump. Early on in my cross country round I had a “wild” moment which meant Clifford jumped the edge of a jump. This is where we got the 50 penalties. It was a line ball call that didn’t go my way this time. This well and truly put us out of contention for a top placing this year.

Was there extra pressure backing up as the  2016 winner?
I think there is a lot of pressure going into a big event at any time. But I didn’t feel under any more pressure than I normally would.

How was the competition overall? Did the tracks feel tougher this year?
Adelaide is always an amazing competition. This year was no exception. I think the cross country was tougher than last year. It was a great track that rode well. There were not many clear and fast rounds but there also wasn’t any badly injured horses or riders. I think this is a sign of a well-designed track.

How did Clifford recover?
Clifford has recovered well and we are looking forward to next year.

You towed Clifford across the Hay Plains, how did your Pajero Sport go?
The Pajero sport towed really well. I was so thankful to be in such a comfortable car and Clifford travelled really well (which is the most important thing!).

I am so lucky to have great people supporting me on this journey. Firstly, Clifford and I wouldn’t have made it to Adelaide without Cliffords new owner Terry and Ginette Snow from Wallinga Park. I can not thank them enough, they have been incredible. The other person who I can’t do this without is my boss and coach Heath Ryan. It is unreal how much time Heath has spent helping me and for a younger rider like myself his advice is invaluable. And of course thanks Mitsubishi for being the major sponsors of this event and supporting our Australian riders!
