How we decided the top 20 hotspots

Starting with a seed list of 38,000 TripAdvisor places of interest, we analysed each location using Australian keyword search volume, TripAdvisor reviews and ratings, and Instagram tags, with data outputs allowing us to identify locations with top ratings that are not as highly searched for.

From there, we combined and normalised all data points to generate a final ‘Outlandish’ score for the top 20 destinations in each category. The Outlandish score takes into account how well known the destination is and how highly rated it is by visitors. The result? A list of Australia’s best kept secrets, just waiting to be explored on your next road trip.

Top Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Australian Road Trip

You’ve chosen the destination, dusted off your camping gear and packed an esky or two. But before you head off into the great outdoors, there are a few essential things to consider to make your road trip safe, fun and memorable for all the right reasons.

Regardless of how far you’re planning to drive, get your vehicle serviced beforehand. Make sure the fluid levels, brakes, battery and tyres (including the spare) are all thoroughly checked. It’s also a good idea to travel with jumper cables and tyre changing equipment. If you’ve never changed a tyre before, it might be a good idea to learn before you head off on your road trip.

Always have plenty of water, food and fuel on hand, particularly if you’re travelling through remote areas. Before you set out for the day, map out the route’s fuel and water stops, so you know how far you have to drive before you’re able to access essential supplies again.

Keep an eye on weather conditions at your destination and along the route before you leave. In many parts of Australia, heavy rain can cause flooding or landslips, closing roads and making some areas too dangerous to visit. In summer, bushfires are a potential hazard to be mindful of too. To avoid disappointment, contact the local visitor information centre to make sure the place you want to visit is open.

If you’re venturing off-road, slow down and approach unfamiliar terrain with caution. Never drive over a hill or cross a river before you’ve checked for hidden obstacles such as a sudden drop or depression. If you’re driving over sand, you’ll need to adjust your tyre pressure, depending on the weight of your load, and how firm the sand is.

While it’s important to work out your key stops before hitting the road, leave some extra time to make some unplanned stops and detours along the way. If you stick to a schedule too closely, you might miss out on a spectacular view, a quirky roadside attraction or a gorgeous country town that can make your trip truly special. Look for signs promoting local landmarks, chat to locals and make the visitor information centre an essential stop on your road trip.

Location seed list was sourced from TripAdvisor’s AU ‘Attractions section’ which provided an analysis base of over 38,000 known locations, sights, attractions & places of interest. Locations were then removed if they fell into ‘man made’ categories i.e shops, centers, tours, shows, etc. to leave only natural, outdoors & real locations.

Locations were further categorised by natural themes i.e., beaches, bodies of water, etc., as well as by geographical location across State, Territory, and City to reveal Australia wide road trip spots.

Well-known locations were also removed from this list using ‘exact match’ keyword formulas, as well as spot-checked against locations included in popular & generic travel listicles to ensure only ‘hidden gem’ locations were compiled. They were also removed if the location was not searched for (i.e., had a Search Volume of 0) as the locations had to have some element of being under the radar, but still had been noticed.

From here the data was analysed to identify locations with an inverse relationship between reviews and search volume with the logic being that some locations may have a reasonably high visitation rate yet are not locations that are commonly searched for thus, they are ‘hidden.’

For each location, the above data points were collated to create a bespoke scoring system utilising: Australian keyword search volume, TripAdvisor reviews & ratings, and volume of Instagram tags. A final score was created by normalising this data output, creating an ‘Outlandish’ score.

The study collated and analysed all data in December 2021 and as such, is correct and representative at time of analysis.
