Traction Battery Information
The Outlander PHEV is a Plug-In Hybrid Electric vehicle that can seamlessly utilise either the electric motors or an internal combustion engine (ICE) to power the wheels. The Traction Battery can be charged by plugging into mains electricity, through regenerative braking or direct from the ICE. The Traction Battery and the Battery Management Unit (BMU) in the PHEV uses lithium-ion cells to drive the electric motors. An inherent characteristic of lithium-ion cells is that they degrade over time due to a range of factors including, but not limited to: operating environment, temperature, storage, charging frequency and/or equipment used, and Traction Battery usage. This will not significantly impact the over-all performance of the vehicle because when the battery is discharged, the PHEV ECU will switch to the ICE to charge the Traction Battery and assist driving the wheels where necessary.
PHEV S-AWC Information
S-AWC used in the Outlander PHEV integrates the Twin Motor 4WD and Active Yaw Control (AYC) systems, allowing for distribution of torque between front and rear electric motors, and braking force to individual wheels. The ECU utilises the electric motors and brake system on the vehicle to ensure stability. As a precautionary mechanism, the ECU will, in certain circumstances, limit the level of continuous torque available in order to protect the motors from drawing excessive power and overheating. Situations where this limitation may occur, include when the vehicle is driven in soft sand or some slippery and icy conditions, approached at a steep or uneven angle or when on a steep incline and one of the vehicle wheels is not in contact with the road. The Outlander PHEV is not intended for use in all off-road conditions and may be unable to traverse some environments, such as those outlined above.
